The high level of safety is another of the B-Class’s strengths. The car design is based on the sandwich concept, which helps to prevent or minimise injuries to the driver and front passenger in the event of a head-on collision.
Thanks to the sandwich concept the occupants have a higher seating position in the B-Class than in a conventional car. This not only permits better all-round visibility, but can also be an advantage in a side-on collision.
The image illustrates the basic principle of the sandwich concept.

All five seats feature three-point seat belts and head restraints as standard, while the two front seats are additionally equipped with active head restraints, belt tensioners and belt force limiters. The two outer rear seats feature belt tensioners. Further safety features include adaptive front airbags and head/thorax sidebags (enlarged sidebags which can provide protection for the head region) for the front seats.
Windowbags and sidebags are available for the rear as optional equipment. If the car is fitted with windowbags, the head/thorax-sidebags in the front are replaced by regular sidebags. The airbags are deployed selectively, that is, depending on the type and severity of the impact.
For the securing of a child seat, the rear of the B-Class is fitted with ISOFIX child seat attachment points with Top Tether.
