In order to survive even the most challenging conditions, the G-Class comes standard with permanent all-wheel drive and a transfer case with a selectable low-range ratio. The on-road ratio is 0.87 and the off-road ratio of 2.16 can be electronically selected using the "Low Range" switch. The transfer case is synchronized and has a lockable differential which can also be electronically activated in the same manner as the locks for the front and rear axles. This allows the G-Class to negotiate gradients of up to 80%.
Three selectable, 100% full-locking differentials equalize the torque at the different wheels, ensuring that the engine power is transferred to the road as smoothly as possible. In addition, all locks can be selected using touch controls in a logical sequence which adjusts to any increased need for traction.
Along with a sophisticated all-wheel drive, the G-Class is equipped with a specially designed suspension. Thanks to a combination of shock absorbers, coil springs and precisely placed rigid axles, the G-Class can conquer any terrain.
