4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive or RWD (rear wheel drive), advanced axle design, rear air suspension, a long wheelbase and dynamic handling control functions deliver a ride that is comfortable in the extreme.
Double wishbone front suspension and a sophisticated four-link design at the rear improve road roar and tyre vibration as well as handling characteristics. Air suspension is standard on the rear axle and optionally available for the front axle.
It is a part of the AIRMATIC package and, in conjunction with the Adaptive Damping System (ADS), improves suspension characteristics β even when the vehicle is fully laden. At speeds above 120 km/h the body is automatically lowered, reducing drag and thus fuel consumption. At the touch of a button the body can also be raised by as much as 50 mm to create extra floor clearance when negotiating poor road conditions.
The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive system provides an even greater support. It distributes the drive torque to front and rear axles at a ratio of 50:50. In conjunction with the Electronic Traction System (ETS) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP), 4MATIC ensures excellent driving stability and traction β particularly on unstable roads, wet surfaces, snow and ice.
[1] Standard for R 320 CDI 4MATIC and R 500 4MATIC, optional extra for the R 280 CDI and R 350 models.
